The Peterborough Police Service offers a variety of professional and support positions for civilians that complement the work of frontline officers. 

 Some of the civilian positions within the Peterborough Police Service are:

Many of our civilian positions follow a shift rotation, much like our police officers. The positions that follow a shift schedule and work 12 hour shifts are:

  • Police Report Entry Clerk
  • 911 Communicator
  • Special constable (Platoon Assignments)

Testing requirements vary from position to position. The testing for each position will assess your skills and knowledge as they relate to the position you applied for. You must meet the standard in order to proceed in the recruitment process.

Background and Security Clearance is a requirement for anyone looking to become part of our team. We conduct a thorough background investigation and reference checks.  

Special constables are civilian employees that are appointed by the Police Services Board and the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services. The appointment allows special constables to have some use of force options, some police officer powers, and the status of a peace officer. 

Duties

At the Peterborough Police Service, some of the special constable's responsibilities are:

  • Transporting, monitoring, controlling, and receiving custody of prisoners
  • Prisoner security in, during, and out of court and in custodial facilities
  • Maintaining courtroom decorum
  • Searching the general public within the courthouse in accordance with procedures
  • Providing assistance to police officers
  • Serving of Summonses and Subpoenas
  • Fingerprinting and photographing criminally charged persons

 

Selection Process


Qualifications

All job qualifications will be listed on our job posting under the ­current job opportunities section when we are recruiting for special constables. Basic requirements for the position of special constable include:

  • Valid Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police (OACP) Police Constable Certificate, for more information go to:   https://oacpcertificate.ca/
  • Valid CPR (basic rescuer level) and Standard First Aid certificate from an accredited agency
  • Valid Class "G" Ontario driver's licence
  • Fitness testing – must be able to complete the Shuttle Run at Level 7 – for more information go to: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iN8NXwm9mhg
