Special constables are civilian employees that are appointed by the Police Services Board and the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services. The appointment allows special constables to have some use of force options, some police officer powers, and the status of a peace officer.
Duties
At the Peterborough Police Service, some of the special constable's responsibilities are:
- Transporting, monitoring, controlling, and receiving custody of prisoners
- Prisoner security in, during, and out of court and in custodial facilities
- Maintaining courtroom decorum
- Searching the general public within the courthouse in accordance with procedures
- Providing assistance to police officers
- Serving of Summonses and Subpoenas
- Fingerprinting and photographing criminally charged persons

Qualifications
All job qualifications will be listed on our job posting under the current job opportunities section when we are recruiting for special constables. Basic requirements for the position of special constable include:
- Valid Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police (OACP) Police Constable Certificate, for more information go to: https://oacpcertificate.ca/
- Valid CPR (basic rescuer level) and Standard First Aid certificate from an accredited agency
- Valid Class "G" Ontario driver's licence
