Scam Warning

The Peterborough Police Service has received several reports about a scam by people responding to private car sales.

Between January and the end of May, there have been online reports detailing the same situation connected to private online car sales.  In each case, one of the potential buyers speaks to the seller and while distracted, two others with buyer create damage to the vehicle, such as making it look like oil is leaking or oil is coming from the exhaust in an effort to buy the vehicle at a cheaper price.

The suspects have been responding to ads placed on Facebook Marketplace.

Please be aware of this scam and take extra precautions.

If you believe it is a scam, you can report online at www.peterboroughpolice.ca/online-reporting

If you are in danger or it is an emergency, please call 9-1-1.
