Grandparent Scam Warning

A warning from the Peterborough Police Service after several Grandparent Scams were reported.

Officers received two calls for service from seniors reporting they had just received a call from an unsolicited person indicating a family member was in trouble with the law and required money to be released.  No money was lost and in both cases it was recognized as a scam.

A reminder to residents to be hyper vigilant about unsolicited phone calls, text or communication.

If you receive such a call remember:

  • Law enforcement agencies will never ask you for money or cryptocurrency
  • Resist the urgency
  • Talk to a trusted person about what is going on
  • Do not respond to requests for personal information such as banking info, passwords or your SIN number

If no money is lost, please report the call to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.  If you are a victim of a scam please call your local police service.  Peterborough Police Service can be reached through the non-emergency line at 705-876-1122 x225.  Frauds can also be reported online at peterboroughpolice.ca
